This year, tanzpol stages a festival of
contemporary dance and performance by focusing
on positions of Afghan and Iranian artists, who live in
different contexts in Europe. tanzpol places a
curatorial emphasis on the conditions and situations
of being in exile and explores the question: "How do
experiences of exile continue within an international
artistic field?"
Through dancing, laughing, singing, feeling,
speaking, celebrating, discussing and mourning
together in interactive formats, gatherings,
interdisciplinary concert-dance performances, three
workshops and three panel discussions, tanzpol
invites you to enter into dialog, listen and get to
know each other.

Ashkan Afsharian
(Curator)
Ashkan is a choreographer, curator and dancer/performer. His first contact with the performing arts was through acting/speech theater and drama studies at the University of Arak/Iran. In 2019 he completed the MA Choreography at the Inter-University Center (HZT) Berlin. In 2019 he received a research grant from the Berlin Senate. In 2020 he co-founded the exchange platform tanzpol. In 2021, he received funding from the Berlin Senate for one- and two-year festivals and series. Furthermore, in 2022 he received a research grant from the Fonds Darstellende Künste as part of #TAKE HEART.

Johanna Kasperowitsch
(Dramaturgy tanzpol Festival)

Johanna is a dancer, dance scholar and co-founder of the tanzpol platform. She has been working there as a dramaturge and curator since 2020. She studied contemporary dance at the Center for Contemporary Dance (ZZT) at the Cologne University of Music and Dance and a Master's degree in Dance Studies at the Free University of Berlin. As part of her contemporary dance practice, she has been working as a freelancer since 2010 and has worked with numerous choreographers internationally. In 2022 she received the Research Award of the Society for Dance Research.

The concert and audio-visual DJ set invites you to
stay a little longer directly after the performance of
Keeping Up With The Iranians, to dance and let the
tanzpol Festival 2024 slowly fade out at Kantine in
Sophiensaele. There will be a bar and plenty of good
beats.
Noufän and Oliver Doerell met in Tehran in 2015. Last
year they decided to bring Noufan to life - a program
something like a mixed sound of postpunk/kraut,
trumpets and noise poetry. In addition, 2/5 BZ aka
Serhat will play the audio-visual Dj-Set
Ausländercore.

Since the 1979 revolution and the subsequent escape and migration of dancers and choreographers to North America and Europe, the documentation and archiving of Iranian dance, both inside and outside Iran, has come to a standstill for over 40 years. In recent years, Berlin has established itself as the first port of call for aspiring Iranian dancers leaving their homeland. As a cosmopolitan metropolis and meeting point for artists from all over the world, Berlin is the preferred destination for Iranians who want to continue their training and careers in contemporary dance. But how is this work recorded for future generations? How does it connect to the history of Iranian dance? This panel will address the urgent need to establish an Iranian dance archive in exile in Berlin, addressing artistic, historical and practical aspects.

BRAVER SPACES - Realities, Barriers and Scopes of Exile in the European Artistic Field

The complexity of the term "exile" goes hand in hand with a wide variety of living and working realities for non-European performing artists in Europe. Forced exile, political exile, experiences of being excluded within one's own community or the positions of queer artists within European event contexts raise complex questions about free spaces and barriers to working, acting and speaking. By including two panel discussions in the festival program, tanzpol aims to give artists, activists, curators and representatives of cultural institutions a platform outside of their artistic, administrative, curatorial and political practice. The needs, obstacles and scope for action of artists from the Iranian and Afghan contexts in Europe will be discussed with regard to the creation of working structures and networking structures, both from the perspective of artists and institutions.

OZI OZAR
Ozi Ozar is a Tehran-born queer artist based in Berlin and Frankfurt am Main. Ozi studied theater and film directing in Tehran and dramaturgy in Frankfurt. Ozi’s artistic approach revolves around comedy, interactive theater and the translation of social media functions into theater and vice versa, focusing on the discourse of identity politics, accessibility of education and queerness. As a multidisciplinary freelancer, Ozi has experience as a director, dramaturg, translator, graphic and web designer, performer and social media entertainer. Since the beginning of the Woman* Life Freedom Movement in Iran, Ozi has dedicated his social media to the revolution in Iran and has been part of the Woman* Life Freedom Collective in Berlin and co-curates the online gallery Voices of Iran in collaboration with international production houses. Ozi is part of the program team of Ballhaus Ost Berlin.

The Erotic Clown is a movement-based workshop for exploring choreographies of erotica through the lenses of destruction, sensuality, comedy and disgust. The participants receive tools and methods departing from Sepideh Khodarahmi’s artistic practices within rhythm-based movement from club dance styles, “Sex-Siren” and hyper-gendered drag-practices. During the workshop we play with tools of destruction, seduction and hapticality in order to expand what ‘the erotic’ may be. We explore gazing and being gazed at in relation to inanimate objects. We grind, shake and wind our hips. We move sensually to silly songs. We invent and create rituals as a gateway into what a queer articulation of pleasure could be. We explore destruction as a gateway to reconstruction. We dive deep into the choreography of erotica to see if there are any jokes that we can laugh at there.

This three-day workshop teaches and applies the creative visual tool, “adamak- ادمک“. With the assistance of adamak as a visual/graphical script, participants throughout the three days will learn and perform Amleth. Amleth is a frame storytelling of Shakespeare’s masterpiece Hamlet, in the style of Persian Dramatic Storytelling Dance (PDSD), which was creatively reconstructed as part of Elnaz’ 25 years of practice and research. This type of dramatic dance has a long tradition in the Persian Empire, in countries such as Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, India and Mongolia. In storytelling, the narrative aspect of the story is conveyed verbally, whereas the dramatic aspect of storytelling is expressed through body movement and gesture.

ELNAZ SHESHGELANI
Elnaz Sheshgelani is a dancer, dance researcher, storyteller, director, puppeteer and educator. She holds a PhD in Performing Arts in which she creatively reconstructed and documented the gestural aspects of Persian dramatic storytelling. She has held workshops on her work and has applied it to performance in theatre productions around the world. Elnaz is a member of UNESCO’s International Dance Council (CID) and works as a dance educator internationally. She teaches Creativity and the Arts in Education at Victoria University in Melbourne and was a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Postcolonial Studies (2022-2023).

This workshop will explore the dynamic interplay between “contemporary dance” and the so-called “other” as traditional and folk dances. Drawing from the rich tapestry of underrepresented dance practices and rituals that have been practiced in the Iranian highlands since pre-Islamic times, such as Sama سما, Hatan هتن, Afar آفر and Ghare Pire Zhan ژن پیره قره. We will explore how these dances can inspire new dance perspectives, aesthetics, dance techniques and unique movement languages. Participants will learn key movement phrases and experiment with different choreographic approaches. They also delve into the uneven and complex rhythms and accents typical of the region, with the aim of understanding, counting and considering them choreographically. They will also be dealing with the historical and political background of this dance practice.

Shortly after the Iranian Revolution in 1979, the new leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, banned music in Iran. Consequently, many artists relocated to Los Angeles to find new ways of making a living and pursuing their artistry in exile. This often happened through recordings of the musical genre dāmbuli dimbol since it was what people would dance to at mehmooni, social gatherings in people’s homes. Keeping Up With the Iranians emerges from this music history by reconstructing a mehmooni starring world-famous singers Setareh and Poupak, number one charting pianist Fereshteh, and renowned choreographer Dancing Dina, visiting all the way from Los Angeles, California. To the rhythm of dāmbuli dimbol songs, they invite the audience to an unforgettable evening of dance, music, cake, and joy.

Afrang Nordlöf Malekian is an artist with a master’s in Arts from the Dutch Art Institute in Arnhem. In his practice, he works with history’s unnoticed creators and puts history into use as a form of documentation and aspiration that calls for improbable and impossible futurities. It examines how narratives and hierarchies disappear, return, and transform in the most unexpected ways. Afrang Nordlöf Malekian is represented in institutions such as Moderna Museet, the Public Art Agency Sweden, and the Arab Image Foundation Library. He has exhibited at venues such as the 10th Berlin Biennale, Moderna Museet, West Den Haag and Tensta konsthall.

Erotic Clown Cakesitting invites you, your gaze and your shivers. It is an invitation, offering and serving. Dive into the erotic potential of destruction to stroke, pulse, touch and taste. The performance is an invitation to enjoy the landscape of pelvic articulation and to witness a narrative, written in goo and crumbles. Sepideh Khodarahmi has toured and researched their Cakesitting- Performance for six years – a sensory piece that consists of them constructing, seducing and finally sitting on a cake. It is a vulnerable and poetic questioning of the erotic potential of destruction. It is a performance with equal parts of disgust, humour and seduction and above all a practice, that allows for the re-shaping and re-articulation of eroticism.

In this work, Ali Moini and his life-size puppet interact through a block and tackle. Through karabiners and pulleys connected by a complex system of ropes, the performer and the metal puppet form an interdependent triad. Thus, each dance movement finds its echo in a dismantled and chaotic version in the movements of the metal, initially fleshless puppet. Here the mechanism does not just function as a translator but also as the manipulator of the life between the performer and his double. Even the meaning of the respective roles fade. The efficiency of the development of the actors on stage can vary to the extent that their identities and classifications – between being object and subject, actor and observer, follower and leader and between authenticity and unreliability – get lost.

ALI MOINI
Iranian-born choreographer and performer, Ali Moini studied dramatic arts and musical composition in Iran before graduating in choreographic creation from Forum Dança in Lisbon. Based in France, he created the soli My Paradoxical Knives, Talking in/to Myself, and Man Anam Ke Rostam Bovad pahlavan. Collaboratively, he co-created Lives with Fred Rodrigues and the group piece Gaugemancy. He choreographed James Carles’ solo Psaume #3 in 2019. His latest piece, ± (plusminus), premiered in 2021 at the NEXT International Festival. Since 2020, his company, Selon l’Heure, collaborates with Latitudes Prod., Latitudes Contemporaines’ production office in Paris.

MY FRIENDS CALL ME DANIEL

In his latest piece, choreographer Cédric Cherdel approaches the idea of choreographic documentation by providing a forum for the performer to speak directly to the audience. The young afghan performer, who calls himself Daniel, lives in France, is twenty-four years old and wants to become an actor. By experimenting with the format of the One-Man-Show and in dialogue the musician Rezai Abdullah he creates a choreographic self-portrait that openly bears witness to longings, disappointments, plans and visions for the future. Daniel embarks on a search for an environment that allows him to reveal himself, to show himself, that can give direction and that points to the future.
The performance aims to create space to think about what drives us, where our responsibilities lie, for ourselves and for others, what moves us and what makes us decide.
